Orangutans in Borneo

Why we love this trip!

  • Visit pristine Borneo rainforest in search of wild (and some reintroduced) Orangutans
  • We’re allowed the privilege of visiting Camp Leakey (and Orangutan feeding stations), the research centre inspired by Jane Goodall
  • Feel like an explorer of old, as we travel up jungle rivers in search of Grey Macaque and Proboscis Ebony Monkeys!
  • Cruise on the Sekonyer River, surrounded by the Tanjung Puting National Park, and Orangutan habitat
  • Stay onboard your very own Klotok (riverboat) and if you wish, sleep under the stars

Overview

The Tanjung Puting National Park is home to a host of both wild and semi-wild Orangutans (one of mans' closest relatives). It is a unique eco-system and with unique species such as the proboscis monkey and the false gavial crocodile.  You will travel from Jakarta to Pangkalan Bun in Kalimantan where we will transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours, giving you a chance to wander around town. The next day you will start your adventure up the Sekonyer River, leaving from the small town of Kumai to board your klotok (a large riverboat) for the rivers and jungles of the Tanjung Puting National Park.

You will visit areas where captive Orangutans are reintroduced into the jungle and witness the work of the Camp Leakey Foundation and FNPF. Both organizations are helping the Orangutan survive and both are helped by donations derived from your participation on this expedition.

Orangutans are highly intelligent with the ability to reason and think. This large, gentle red ape is one of our closest relatives, sharing 97% of our DNA. Indigenous peoples of Indonesia and Malaysia call this ape "Orang Hutan" literally translating into English as "People of the Forest".

The Orangutan is a remarkable creature as it is the world's largest arboreal primate. Now faced with the possibility of extinction in the wild, the Orangutan needs our help more than ever. By visiting them in the wild you will not only be contributing to tourism dollars into the area but a portion of your trip cost is donated to the protection of the Orangutan.

To see these creatures in their own environment is such an amazing opportunity.

Private Journey? No problem we can run this trip for 2-8 people on any date you choose. Give us a call or email us and we can discuss what's involved.
