Background
What do you love most about getting away for a long weekend? Is it recharging your batteries, getting out into nature, or maybe just taking in the crisp fresh air?
The High Country in Victoria’s east is some of the states most pristine wilderness. Painted with snow in winter, and stunning grass filled vistas in the warmer months, it conjures images of wild horses and mountain huts. The landscape is ancient and gifted with a rich indigenous and colonial history.
This stunning alpine setting gifts us with incredible walks boasting Victoria's highest peaks in Mount Bogong and Mount Feathertop. We’ll draw on the local communities and their wonderful produce, to keep us full over these 4 days.
This getaway will provide the perfect balance of the great outdoors, cycling, walking, and dining… simply getting back to nature.
So, could you handle a glass of wine at the end of a lovely day?
“Very much so after a day hiking” – Connie (wine advocate and No Roads fan)

Overview
This weekend in the Victorian High Country is the opportunity to breathe the fresh, mountain air with friends old and new. We have tailored this trip to give people the best the High Country has to offer. Its stunning landscapes, fresh local produce, and comfortable accommodation.
We’ll base ourselves at Bright, situated at the Southern end of the Ovens Valley, and at the foot of the nearby mountains. From this home away from home, we’ll breakfast on fresh local fare to give you the best possible foundation for the day's activities.
Both full days will be filled with lovely walking across the stunning High Country terrain. We’ll embrace the areas colonial mining history and salivate at the sumptuous views. Lunches will be a picnic affair, with the produce again provided by local sources within the valley.
One of the highlights of this adventurous weekend will be the opportunity to sample local wines and ales in their natural setting, then complement it with some delightful, seasonal, regional fare.
The High Country will provide you with stunning walks, beautiful accommodation, and delicious food and drinks. What more could you possibly want?
This is a great weekend adventure for couples and friends alike!

Routes
Day 1 Thursday: Bright is approximately a 3.5-hour drive from Melbourne. We’re hoping for most people to arrive at around 6 pm. On arrival, refreshments will be available (a local wine or ale) followed by a grazing dinner at the local Bright Brewery. During dinner, we will get to know each other and brief you on the following day's activities. (D)
Day 2 Friday: Today we’ll be ferried up Mount Hotham to our starting point at the Diamantina Hut.
One of the High Country’s best-regarded walks, we’ll straddle the ‘Razorback’, the high ridgeline that affords stunning views in every direction as we make the ascend Victoria’s second-highest peak, the 1,922 metre Mount Feathertop.
We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch as we savour our surrounds, before making our way back to the trailhead before being transferred back to the small town of Harrietville, where we’ll dine at the famed Snowline Hotel, before being whisked back to Bright. (B, L, D)
Day 3 Saturday: After breakfast, we’ll walk into town and get everyone outfitted with their bikes for the day. From here we’ll hit the Murray to Mountain cycling trail, making use of the region's disused railway line. Despite the surrounding hills, the rail trail hugs the valley floor, making for a relaxing ride. We’ll visit 2-3 cellar doors (accessibility can be seasonal for some), enjoying country hospitality, tastings and tours before indulging in a picnic lunch and the hospitality of the Boynton family at Feathertop. Some of these generous vineyards, even allow us to purchase wines and have them delivered to our lodgings back in Bright.
After a relaxing ride back to Bright, we’ll allow a little time to rest and relax (not tired, why not sneak out and sample a gin at Reed & Co Distillery).
Now fresh, we’ll head into town for dinner. David from Elm Dining has invited us to embrace their fine food philosophy, served through their 6-course degustation menu showcasing the best seasonal, local product (in what was originally Bright’s Doctors surgery). (B, L, D)
Day 4 Sunday: We love Sundays and you will too as there is no more walking (unless you want to take advantage of one of the local trails yourself) but just a delicious breakfast at our lodgings. From here you have several options, maybe visit another winery, or find a nice spot to break up the journey home. We can certainly give you some ideas of what to see on your return to Melbourne (or elsewhere). (B)
